FAQs

  • Do motorhomes need a special MOT?

Motorhomes don't require a completely different type of MOT, but they are tested according to their weight and classification. The MOT test for motorhomes follows the same basic safety standards as other vehicles.

The key difference is that motorhomes are classified by their maximum allowable mass (MAM), which determines whether they need a Class 4 or Class 7 MOT. At AMC, our technicians specialise in motorhomes and understand their unique requirements, ensuring your vehicle receives the appropriate testing for its classification and features.

  • Are motorhomes class 4 MOT?

Most motorhomes are indeed Class 4 MOT vehicles. Class 4 applies to motorhomes with a maximum allowable mass (MAM) up to 3,000kg. This includes the majority of motorhomes on UK roads, from compact camper vans to mid-sized motorhomes.

However, it's important to check your vehicle's weight classification, as some larger or heavily equipped vehicles may exceed 3,000kg and require Class 7 testing instead. You can find your motorhome's MAM on the vehicle identification plate, usually located near the driver's door or in the engine bay.

If you're unsure about your motorhome's classification, we at AMC can verify its class and ensure it receives the correct type of testing.

  • What is checked on an MOT for a motorhome?

A motorhome MOT includes all the standard checks performed on any vehicle, plus additional considerations for motorhome-specific features. The main areas examined include:

Standard vehicle checks: Lights, brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, exhaust system, seat belts, windscreen and mirrors, fuel system, and vehicle structure. The engine and emissions are also tested to ensure they meet environmental standards.

Additional equipment: Items such as bike racks, awnings, or external storage boxes are also checked to ensure they're securely fitted and don't obstruct lights or number plates. The tester will also verify that any modifications or conversions have been carried out safely.

Weight and loading: The tester will check that the vehicle's weight distribution appears correct and that any visible signs of overloading or structural stress are identified.

Safety equipment: Items like emergency exits, step stability, and door security may be examined depending on the motorhome's design and features.

The habitation area (living quarters) is not tested during an MOT - this requires a separate habitation check, which we also provide at AMC for complete motorhome safety compliance.

  • Does my motorhome need a Class 7 MOT?

Your vehicle needs a Class 7 MOT if its maximum allowable mass (MAM) is between 3,000kg and 3,500kg. This applies to larger vehicles, typically those over about 7 metres in length or those with substantial equipment and furnishings that push them over the 3,000kg threshold.

To determine if your vehicle needs Class 7 testing, check the vehicle identification plate, which shows the MAM. If it states 3,001kg or higher (up to 3,500kg), you'll need Class 7 testing.

  • What class of MOT is a motorhome over 3500kg?

Very few motorhomes exceed 3,500kg, as this weight limit is a crucial threshold in vehicle licensing and testing requirements. Most motorhome manufacturers design their vehicles to stay under this limit to keep them accessible to standard driving license holders and standard testing procedures.

  • How much does it cost to MOT a motorhome?

The cost of a motorhome MOT depends on its classification. At AMC in Hailsham, we charge £54.85 for all motorhome MOTs. This competitive pricing includes our comprehensive testing service and the expertise of technicians who understand motorhomes.
